Hi guys, I’m thinking to get a macbook and i am leaning towards macbook air as it is the lightest. However, I’m afraid that it is not good enough for programming tasks or VMs that require x86. Should i get the macbook pro (older version) or settle for macbook air?

I think it's better to get a macbook pro as a CS student. When you start running docker etc it's gonna take up a lot of RAM

Speaking as a graduating student who owns a M1 MBA, if you’re certain you’ll need a VM that requires independent resources, the ARM chip doesn’t allow you to do that as Parallels is still sharing resources with your main machine so it’s not independent - no workaround for now. If it’s not a problem for you then get a 16GB MBA because you’ll need the extra RAM for Docker. M1 MBA is already an overkill instead of speed so you won’t need a M1 Pro or M1 Max chip on the MBPs. Don’t waste your money on older Macs, would rather you get a cheap Windows laptop first if you really need one.
