#1956: Should I feel guilty wanting to work for social media companies like tiktok/fb
#1956internshipsfull-timeadvice· 1323d ago

Just watched a youtube video about how usage of social media can change someone's brain. Like it causes someone to be less able to focus, and to be more anxious. And I think this is somewhat true? After cutting my usage I do feel mentally healthier. As a CS student, it's normal to aim for FAANG companies and other big tech like tiktok, but I am starting to wonder about the impact I am going to have on the world. Is it wrong to chase after these companies?

Big mood. I think the answer I've come to is that we as future developers have a lot of power in our hands, and the scalability of software means that there is a moral imperative for us to understand, code, and advise employers on the impacts of our code (whether they heed it or not is out of our hands). It might seem ridiculous or a waste of time, but imagine a workplace where no-one tries to understand the impacts of their work. I'd say go for it! But keep these potential impacts in mind and be an ethical coder.

my personal observation is that all the software engineers that pretended to give a shit about morals all ended up working for Meta in the end once they were offered a large enough package :)
