#2092: I am going to die for capstone
#2092schooladvice· 1315d ago

first-timer here, I need advice on whether I should drop my capstone module and appeal for another 4 mc module concurrently on modreg before tuesday. As it sounds, capstone sounds scary already. After attending the very first lecture of the capstone, I feel lost. I tried researching on the topic of wearable AR laser tag game (topic for the capstone) and still feeling the same, making me rather demoralised. Reason why I am holding on to this module was I could not get the other modules I bid for during round 2/3. I plan to take CS3230 if I have to drop capstone as it is a 8 MCs mod. I am not prepared for CS3230 either, but comparatively to my capstone, it feels like capstone is a bigger thing. I do not know if it just me feeling it would be better for me to take it in Y4 when after I take more TEs or I just feel so unready for capstone compared to my peers (maybe my peers feel the same, idk?). The professors did also tell us the aspects of the project meant to be open, which I was not surprised, and that of course makes things harder.

From my experience doing a research-based FYP, I think what you are feeling is completely normal and your peers are probably feeling the same thing. I was very lost initially and had no prior experience in the research topic as well. Doing more mods are probably not going to help (unless there's one on the same topic?), so taking it now or in Y4 is probably not going to make a difference. These kinds of open projects are meant to make you feel uncomfortable, because we are not used to it in SOC where previously the project scope is always given to us. I think you just have to be patient with yourself and the profs usually understand as well. In my case, my prof gave me quite a bit of time to get familiar with the topic and also provided resources I can look through. All the best no matter what you choose!
